A new summer tote

I finally squeezed in some sewing time this past week and made myself a new summer tote!

I've had this style on my mind for quite awhile, after discovering moop and their awesome market bag. Mine is a bit simpler, with just one pleat.

Both the outside and lining fabrics are from the bargain bin at Joann fabrics. I wasn't quite ready to use some of my nicer fabrics, though I still really like both fabrics for this bag. I ironed the interfacing onto the lining since I didn't want to lock down the outside because of the pleat. I initially made it way too big, and actually took it apart and took all the seams in. More and more I'm realizing that with sewing you just gotta go for it and persist until it comes out right.

Also, I'm going to the Renegade Craft Fair in San Francisco tomorrow! I'm super duper excited - I know there's going to be tons of talented people there to be inspired by. I'll try to take some pics and share with all of you on Monday!

really nice bag! I love this big totes because I ussually carry lots of staff. I have a kid and between cookies, something to drink, a car, a book and...there is always too much. Like the fabrics too!

I wish i knew how to sew!

The bag looks so good. Did you use a pattern or just create it yourself?

Really adorable, I love pleats. I am so jealous of the Renegade Craft Fair - wish I had planned in advance to be in SF for that. Enjoy - I am sure it will be wonderful.

I can sew but I have a problem with doing up the edges so that they won't fray. After washes, sewed stuff tend to wear a little and mending just don't work sometimes, so I'm sort of giving up sewing. =( I admire your effort and your tote looks brilliant.

MaryAnne - thank you! I love pleats too. :) And I'll share pictures from the fair soon!

Cleen - haha, thanks!

Stardust - I wish I had a serger to finish up the raw edges, but having a lining is a nice way of hiding those edges too. I haven't done it, but I think you can also use bias tape as well. I hope you give it another try :)

I think you have done really well with this bag as the shape looks difficult to make. Love the shape and the fabric - hope you have got the size how you want it. Will we be seeing it in one of your nicer fabrics?
