Some recent Instagram photos from this past weekend. Irving had Friday off so we headed up to San Francisco for some shopping and good eats, but other than that we've just been taking it easy. I started cleaning up my studio a bit too and came across my supplies for making mini clips (first photo), so I've been working on that as well. It's perfect for multi-tasking while watching a little TV.

Just a few photos from the last couple of weeks. I went to the Renegade Craft Fair in San Francisco and bought a little penguin ornament and some new everyday studs along with a few other things I didn't get to photograph. We had a family gathering the week before so Christmas weekend was fairly quiet which was nice. My brother's family stayed over so we opened gifts together Christmas morning. Oscar actually got tired of opening gifts and refused to open any more about halfway through and just wanted to play with his new toys. We did go up to the city again with my in-laws on Christmas day and walked around Union Square. Oscar went on his first cable car ride and loved it.

I'm 27 weeks along now and am feeling like time is flying by. Just 3 more months 'til our lives are changed again.

This past weekend we headed up to San Francisco with Traci and her family to take family photos for each other. The weather was perfect, and Traci and her husband Herman got some really great shots. The first two photos above are a just a couple of our favorites from the shoot.

We also celebrated Oscar's 2nd birthday with family this weekend - just a cozy dinner with cake, balloons, and gifts afterwards. I love that he understands more now and seemed to really enjoy things like blowing out his candles and ripping open his presents.

We went with my brother's family to Uesugi Farms this past weekend. The weather was a sunny 80 degrees - oddly warm, especially considering the snow storms hitting the East. Oscar got to enjoy his first carousel ride, and was as usual very quiet and somber at first, as he often is with new experiences. I'm so glad to be living near family, and love that Oscar gets to grow up with his cousins.

Oh, and since we're on the topic of family - we're expecting! I'm about 18 weeks now, and will be finding out the sex this week. Can't wait.

I've just put some new goodies in the shop - a month later than I had planned. It's just a partial shop update with the 2012 pocket planners, as well as a couple of new notecard sets. I hope to put up some of the new textile goods I've been working on by the end of the month.

It feels so good to have something in the shop again. To celebrate, I thought I'd do a giveaway for one of the 2012 planners - just leave a comment telling me which is your favorite planner by next Wednesday, October 19th and I'll randomly pick and announce a winner then.

monterey bay aquarium

We took Oscar to the Monterey Bay Aquarium for the first time. He was processing everything around him very seriously for the most part, but I think he enjoyed it. He grew tired of it after awhile though and just wanted to be outside to run around and look at the boats. He was hamming it up for the camera at dinner afterwards, and kept on turning around to the lady behind us to smile and flirt with her. Silly boy.

I am slowly making progress with the shop update, and will aim for everything to be ready by mid-September. Can't wait!

old children's books

There was a whole cabinet full of old children's books at the house we stayed in while in Maine. Two in particular caught my eye: Manners Can Be Fun by Munro Leaf, and The House in the Tree by Karen Gunthorp. The first one is such an entertaining read, even for adults, and it's actually still in print. I loved the illustrations in the second one.

We've been taking it pretty easy, but we managed to make a brief trip to the beach where Oscar had a ton of fun and got quite dirty. We went during low tide so the beach was not so much sandy as muddy and heard from our friends who stayed later that the beach is much cleaner during high tide. We also had some amazing baked goods at The Standard Baking Co, and a great dinner at Duckfat, where much of the food was made with -- yup, you guessed it -- duck fat.

We rented a waterfront house in Maine for a week-long vacation with some good friends. It's so lush and beautiful here on the east coast. We took Oscar to a nearby farm today and had some really good ice cream. I think we might be going back there everyday.

The lovely folks at Tea Collection contacted me recently and asked me to choose and review a couple of their pieces, which I would then get to keep. I had heard good things about Tea before and had seen some of their children's clothing, so of course I couldn't pass up this fun opportunity to score some cute new clothes for Oscar! I ended up getting 2 tees for him, both of which I love. I especially like the striped henley -- the little almost-3/4 sleeves and the colored buttons are so cute. And the cotton on both tops has a really nice feel.

I was pleasantly surprised that they make women's clothing as well, and was pretty excited when I saw this dolman-style top. I've been really liking this look lately but haven't actually been able to find many that I like (especially ones that are all cotton and machine-washable, a must when you're exposed to dirty little faces and hands everyday!) This may become one of my favorite tops - I'm tempted to get another in gray!

I found these beautifully illustrated used books from a used book store near our house recently. The children's books are only 50 cents apiece, so I go there every once in awhile to look for new (old) books for Oscar. I was really excited to find the Paul and Ann Rand one. I've never heard of the other two authors but really love the illustrations.

I finally made the leap a couple of weeks ago and quit my job to be home with Oscar. It was something that I'd been wanting to do for awhile, so it felt surreal when it was actually happening. I told myself when I graduated from college that I would only do engineering for 3 to 5 years before switching to something design-related. It's hard to believe I'd been driving to the same building and doing pretty much the same kind of work for almost 10 years.

The last couple of weeks have been nice. It's nice to be able to start dinner early, go grocery shopping during the day, and to finally get my little corner of the office set up so I can work on getting the store back up and running. Life feels less rushed, and I love that I have more time with Oscar. There are challenges of course, and I know there will be good days and bad days, but right now I'm feeling pretty thankful.

We set up a little Easter egg hunt in the backyard for Oscar and my niece, Colette, today. I filled the eggs with Cheerios and other toddler-friendly snacks. It was cute 'cause we pretty much had to point out where each of the eggs were for them. Oscar was very serious the whole time, as he often is with completely new experiences, like he really needed to concentrate on soaking it all in.

out and about

There's been a few sunny days here and there in the last month, so we've been able to take Oscar out and about more than usual. It helps too that he is down to one nap now so that we usually have a big chunk of time in the afternoon. He's been getting quite comfortable with walking around now, and hardly crawls anymore. It's strange seeing him upright most of the time, and it makes me happy and sad at the same time that he is becoming more like a boy and less like a baby. Of course this also means he's started to express his preferences much more strongly, and I've been surprised that my mild-mannered boy is maybe not so mild-mannered after all. At least not all the time. There's a lot I'm still trying to figure out - the whole discipline thing, and how much I want to make mealtimes a battle, for example. He's also been picking up a lot of words in the last couple of months. I try to speak to him in Chinese as much as I can, so most of what he says is in Chinese, but he's picked up on a few English words like blueberry and peekaboo (I guess there isn't a Chinese equivalent for that!), and his version of banana is "yaya".

I feel like I can't enjoy him enough, he just changes so fast.

The pace seems to have slowed down a bit around here. I've stopped selling the pocket planners in the shop now that it's the end of January, and it feels nice to not have to think about orders for awhile. I'm looking forward to having more free evenings to do some things I've been wanting to do for awhile, like finally organizing the studio or maybe just taking it easy.

Oscar's been really liking fruit these days, stuffing his mouth full of blueberries and those little clementines. I can't get enough of those dimpled little hands!

I designed a couple of things for Rachel's baby shower, one of which is a kite and clouds pattern for a notebook cover. Feel free to download the pattern here for personal use if you'd like. I hope to offer more fun freebies like this in the future, so keep an eye on the sidebar to your right!

Oscar is one! He actually turned one a couple of weeks ago, but we didn't have a proper celebration until this past weekend.

I've been pretty obsessed with stripes lately, so thought I'd do a "sails & stripes" theme for his party with deep blue, seafoam green, and pops of yellow.

Once the invites were done, everything else came together easily..

The idea for the paper sailboats above came from here. I printed some coordinating patterns onto letter-sized paper and followed these instructions to make the boats. For the hat I printed the striped pattern on a half circle, glued it together to make a cone, and curled some strips of vellum to go on top.

I found the perfect striped fabric at Ikea and sewed drawstring bags to fill with goodies for the kids' favors. The adults got fruit jellies in glassine bags taped shut with striped stickers (printed onto adhesive sheets and cut into long strips).

All in all it was a great celebration. I know all the decor was really an excuse for me to have a little creative fun, but I figured a first birthday doesn't come around too often, and surviving the first year with a first kid is worth celebrating. This past year was quite a year for our family, with my dad losing a 2-year battle with cancer when Oscar was only 5 weeks old, and Oscar having some health issues that had us in and out of the hospital quite a bit. We are here today by God's goodness and grace, and are so incredibly thankful for Oscar, for each other, and for our family and friends.

first trip to the beach

We spent the weekend in Santa Cruz with some friends for a small church retreat. We walked down to the beach on Saturday afternoon and the weather was perfect. I love seeing that concerned look on Oscar's face whenever he got close to the sand.

Oh, and we dressed him up as a tomago sushi for Halloween!

We spent this past weekend down by the coast with some good friends. Part of it was spent going out and about, but most of the time we just bummed around the house we rented and ate lots of good food. Definitely my kind of vacation.

I've been working on my 2011 pocket planners, which I hope to have in the shop by the end of the month. And believe it or not, Oscar will be turning one in about a month, so I've also been working on his birthday invites. It feels like this year has flown by without me doing much with my shop or creative pursuits, but I'm okay with that since a lot has happened. Parenthood is a pretty big life-changer and I guess I'm giving myself time to adapt and work things out.

A couple of weekends ago we went to Michigan and met up with my good college friends and their families. One of the highlights was going blueberry picking at a nearby farm. Besides eating lots of blueberries while picking bucketfuls, I had the best grilled cheese sandwich ever. I'm wishing now that I got more pictures of the rest of the trip, but I guess I was too busy having a good time. It was so good seeing these friends and doing what we do best: cooking and eating together.

I've been having a hard time finding pants that I like for Oscar. Since we're using cloth diapers, which tend to be a bit bulkier, I'd rather not put him in jeans as it just seems like it would be too uncomfortable for him. So I found some lightweight denim and used this pattern as a guide to make some trousers for him. I think he likes them, especially the buttons.. as you can tell in the first photo.

So far all the toys Oscar's been playing with are gifts from friends. Well, he's finally starting to get a little bored with the same old toys, so I went poking around on Etsy and found these lovely wooden toys. The teething toys and car is from here, and the helicopter is from here. I'm saving most of them for later this month when we're taking Oscar on his first plane ride. I'm a little nervous about traveling with him but super excited to see friends!

And just for fun, here is one of my favorite recent pictures of my little man. He's been getting incredibly active these past few days. Every diaper change is a battle as he twists and turns and just will not stay still. He is soaking up the world around him. It's such a joy just to watch him.

Some snapshots of life around the house this summer. Oscar is 8 months and has been enjoying his solids (those are pureed peaches in the second photo). So far I haven't found anything he won't eat, though it took a few tries for him to like applesauce of all things. Charlie was very reluctant to sit next to Oscar in that last shot -- see how cool and aloof she is looking!

We drove up to San Francisco with Oscar a couple of weekends ago and walked around Hayes Valley after lunch at Frjtz. We stopped for some French macarons at Paulette, but we ate them all before I could get some pictures. Maybe next time I'll have more self-control! Of course, I had to stop by Miette as well to admire all the beautiful packaging. So inspiring! It was a short trip since we went in between Oscar's morning and afternoon naps, but it was great to get out and walk around.

My sweet boy turned 6 months this weekend! 6 months of having this beautiful little life be a part of mine. Of course there have been many tough moments, but they are nothing compared to the joy he brings me everyday. He is laughing and smiling lots, drooling like crazy, trying to put everything he gets his hands on into his mouth, and loves to bounce up and down in our laps. I started him on solids this weekend too and he seems to be enjoying it so far. Here he is trying out his highchair!

Now that Oscar is going down at bedtime easily and staying asleep, I have a little time for myself in the evenings. The other night I went to Ikea to get the Antilop highchair since Oscar will be starting solids soon, and of course got a couple other things that caught my eye as well: this super cute house print fabric, and a wool throw with a lovely graphic pattern. I haven't figured out what to do with the fabric yet - any ideas?

This weekend we celebrated my niece's 1st birthday! It's nice to have an opportunity to do a little crafting and make something girly. I made a couple of felt hair clips (I referenced this tutorial) and a hop skip jump doll. It's a great pattern -- just hemming those little pants with the sewing machine was a bit of a challenge!

The top the doll is wearing is made with a Liberty of London cotton that I bought when I was in Paris last year. I only bought something like half a meter because it was quite pricey. While in France I had also bought Colette a top made with the same material, so of course I thought it'd be cute for her to match her doll!

4 months!

Oscar turned 4 months today, and what a ride it has been! Our life is so different now. My time is not my own, and my attention is always split. Weekdays feel like a race: packing the diaper bag, rushing from home to the grandparents to work, rushing to pick him up and get him ready for bed, figuring out dinner, doing laundry. It amazes me how many women have done this and are still doing it. It really is so worth it though, I just can't get enough of him. I don't want him to grow up, but I can't wait to see how he turns out. I wish I can bottle up his smell, every smile - all of it.

Oh, I treated myself to this drika.b wristlet the other day. I've had my eye on her goods for quite awhile, and decided that it'd be nice to have something that I can throw easily into the diaper bag.

I went back to work full-time this week, and missed little Oscar so much! But I'm so thankful for two wonderful grandmas who are taking turns taking care of him during the day. I'm pumping breastmilk for Oscar while at work and have to carry the pump and milk storage bottles back and forth everyday. So the Sunday before I went back I finally pulled out the sewing machine and sewed up a tote bag while Oscar slept. I was glad to finally use some brown duck cloth I had in my stash -- the natural stiffness is perfect for bags. I eyeballed the measurements, but the size turned out to be perfect for all the pumping supplies and also lunch and snacks for work.

With Oscar and working, I'm bummed that I'll have even less time than before for crafting and keeping up the shop.. but I'm hopeful that I'll get snippets of time here and there!

We got ducks! Yes, as pets. Random, I know. I'm not really sure how it happened. Irving got the idea somehow, started researching them obsessively, and then.. they were shipped to us earlier this month, meeping away in a little cardboard box. All 3 are girls, and we named them Thelma, Louise, and Betsy. Here they are, getting acquainted with Charlie.

I finally got around to sending out Oscar's birth announcement. I decided to keep it super simple, and also made it into a postcard to save time, money, and trees. The back just has his birth date and stats.

And here's the little guy all smiley and happy. He's growing so fast, I'm trying to make sure I take pictures of him in some of my favorite outfits before he outgrows them all! When we talk to him now, he'll crack a huge smile and try to mimic our mouth movements and will often coo in response. He's so fun.

The winter holidays came and went and finally, a post! Things have been pretty crazy around here, I'm not quite sure where to begin. I guess I should introduce our new baby boy first: Oscar!

Oscar was born on November 22nd and was 8lb 3oz and 20 inches long. I went into labor at about 11am that morning, and left for the hospital at about 3:30pm. By the time the doctor checked me at 4:15pm, I was already 8cm dilated. An hour later, my water broke and I was at 10cm and ready to push! I couldn't believe how fast it went, though I must say the pushing was much harder and longer than I had anticipated. I pushed for about 2 hours and seriously thought it would never end. But out he came and boy did he change our world! The last few weeks have been a blur, and felt both slow and fast. I'm so thankful that things are getting easier now that he is 6 weeks (already!). I still can't quite believe that this beautiful little life is here.

woodland critters baby shower

A few of us threw a woodland critters baby shower for Traci this past Saturday. Everything turned out great and we all had a blast! I had tons of fun designing the invites and other pieces to go with the theme.

I asked Irving to chop up some branches from our backyard to make stands for the food labels.

For the candied pecan favors, I sewed muslin drawstring pouches and stamped them with a squirrel stamp I carved out of an eraser.

We also bought a manzanita branch and stuck some felt leaves onto it for the main spread. Sumiko, Shelley, and Rita sewed little birds and foxes, and Rita and some other ladies made some amazing food. Susan knitted these awesome props for the photobooth (yup, we're into photobooths!).

40 weeks

Here I am today, one day past my due date! The doctor told me yesterday that I'm already 2 cm dilated, but so far there haven't been any real labor contractions. So it could happen tonight, or it may not happen for a few more days. I've been keeping busy with the shop and just taking care of little things here and there. It's weird yet exciting that at any moment, our lives are going to change in a major way.

Some recent little projects completed: fabric storage buckets for the baby room (i roughly followed this pattern), and re-upholstering an old chair our neighbor was trying to get rid of. I bought the fun yellow fabric on our honeymoon in Stockholm.

And look what I found at Kinokuniya the other day! I've been eyeing all the cute masking tape that has been showing up on Etsy, and am thrilled that I can find them locally now.

baby crafting

I'm finally making some progress in sewing some things for the baby now that maternity leave is in full swing! I debated about the crib bumper pads for awhile, with the SIDS risk and all.. but decided to go ahead and make them, and will just take them out once the baby can scoot around the crib, and put them back in after he's a year old. The pattern is from Lotta Jansdotter's Simple Sewing for Baby, except I decided to make the bumper only about 8" tall instead of a foot tall. The nursing cover was pretty quick and easy - the pattern is from here. I still have a couple more things I'd like to make, but I'll be okay if I don't get around to them since I'm pretty darn close to my due date now!

Finally.. they're in the shop! I'll try to keep them in stock for as long as I can, but expect that I'd have to close the shop for a bit when the baby arrives. It's been over 6 months since I've updated my shop, it feels so good to be doing this again!

34 and 37 weeks

I took this first picture at 34 weeks and never got around to posting it! So here it is along with the 37 weeks picture. It's hard to tell that I got bigger, but I'm pretty sure I did..

And, I'm pleased to say that I'm officially on maternity leave now! I was so excited that I got up earlier than I needed to, ran out to buy milk, and made a dutch baby for breakfast. I'd been wanting to try it ever since Susan told me how easy and awesome it was. It was everything I expected it to be, though I might cut down on the butter a bit next time.

I'm still planning on one last shop update before the baby comes. I know I had said I'd put the 2010 pocket planners in the shop tomorrow, but I'm going to have to push it out by a day. Be sure to check back on Wednesday!

thrift store finds

Once every few weeks or so I'll stop by the local Goodwill to look for treasures in the knick-knack section. Most of the time I leave empty-handed, but lately I've had a couple of fruitful trips. I was super excited to find this vintage Pyrex dish because I already have a larger one in the same design. Perfect for serving dips or fresh berries.

I've been looking for something to hold fruit in the kitchen, and this vintage wire basket does the job beautifully.

And last but not least.. a library kit! Complete with a date stamp!

vintage circus baby shower!

As expected, the baby shower this past weekend was absolutely fantastic, thanks to some super kind and talented friends of mine! There were giant red and white balloons tied to little white pots with wheat grass, tons of delicious circus-themed food, a candy bar, and fun kiddie stations like block-painting, face-painting, and balloon animals... it was amazing!

Oh, and we can't forget the photo booth!

Happy 2 years to us! We had a fabulous time in carmel -- wandering around town or down to the beach and enjoying some fancy meals. Charlie came along and wasn't so scared by the beach this time.

Oops. Somehow the month of August flew by without a post, and also without pictures documenting my growing belly! Well, here I am at 29 weeks. It definitely feels like the bump got a lot bigger just in the last 2 weeks or so. The baby is healthy, and I've just been feeling a little more uncomfortable than before, and maybe also a bit more tired or low-energy. So far so good. Life has felt busy though, with lots of family stuff going on, and a bit of trying to get ready for the baby's arrival. I'm starting to feel like I'm running out of time to do all the things I want to do before the baby comes, and yet I don't want to be running around just checking things off my list. I'd like to just enjoy being pregnant, and also just spend time with Irving, family, and friends.

Also, some lovely friends of mine are throwing me a baby shower this month! The invitation below is designed by my amazingly talented friend, Traci. Um, is that not the most creative thing you've ever seen? I feel totally blessed to have such an awesome invitation and what I'm certain is going to be a crazy awesome shower. They are totally spoiling me! I'll definitely be posting photos so be sure to check back in a couple of weeks.

Irving and I are off this weekend to celebrate our 2-year anniversary in beautiful Carmel. He found a pet-friendly hotel of course so Charlie is coming along. Hope you all have a great weekend!

renegade craft fair

Last Saturday I went with my buddies Susan and Traci up to the Renegade Craft Fair in San Francisco. I had gone last year as well and I must say there were definitely more sellers and shoppers this year. We had a blast, and I spent all the cash I brought and then some! Yikes. No regrets though - I love everything I purchased.

Some things for me: a cute card pouch from Midori, and some post earrings I just could not pass up (cute posts are so hard to come by! I'm always looking for them but never have much luck) from Meander and Figs & Ginger.

23 weeks

Finally, a picture of my bump! The weeks are just flying by, and I'm starting to feel like November is not very far away at all. There's still so much I want or need to do, but I'm glad we've been making a bit of progress lately. In the last week we bought and set up the crib and re-arranged the guest room furniture to make it into the baby room. This weekend Irving ripped out the glass doors we have in the bathroom and put in shower curtains. I've also been doing quite a bit of research on cloth diaper systems and the various brands out there.

Sadly, there's been no crafting at all, but there's been some much-needed inspiration: a 4-hour screenprinting class in San Francisco last weekend (no pictures - totally forgot!) and a trip to the Renegade Craft Fair with some great friends. I'll be back soon to show you all my loot!

Made some scallion pancakes earlier this week to go with some noodles for dinner. Not the healthiest thing, but oh so good!

And a new summer dress for the 4th of July! I've managed to find cute non-maternity wear that fits over my growing tummy, otherwise I'd be wearing yoga pants and long t-shirts all the time. I don't feel so bad knowing that I'll be able to wear these after the baby.

Have a happy 4th everyone! Oh, and here's the recipe I used for the mango cucumber salsa. (Unless you like spicy, I'd recommend going with just 1 jalapeno instead of 2!)

Made some mango cucumber salsa today - perfect for a hot day like today.

I finally got around to taking pictures of the fabric I bought in Paris to share with you all. I was so excited to find the fabric used in the dress from the previous post.

And look what my sis-in-law, Janice, gave me! It turns out she learned how to sew recently and made these little drawstring pouches from a Japanese sewing book. I love it, and it's making me want to sew.

Thank you all so much for the congrats and well-wishes! It's hard to believe that I'm halfway through already. The pregnancy is going well, and we found out recently that it'll be a boy. Most of my fabrics are girly, so I'm going to need to start collecting some boy-ish or unisex prints!

While at an outdoor market in France I found this sweet little dress (and later found out that it's made from Liberty fabric!) and just had to buy it for my brother's newborn baby girl.

And speaking of babies.. I wanted to let you all know that I'm expecting! I'm about 17 weeks along and just recently got past the nausea, which has been the reason I've been so neglectful of the shop and blog. It's been incredibly satisfying to be productive once again.

I've been doing a lot of thinking about the shop, and feel the need to make more time to nest and craft more for me, the baby, and our home. I have some ideas about changes I can make to the shop, but nothing concrete yet. I've been making most of the items as the orders come in, and I think at the very least I need to move towards making things in batches before listing them in the shop. I just hope I'll be able to make time for both the shop and personal crafting!

Oops, I guess I lost steam there with posting France photos! I have a few more, but I think I'll just end with these last 2 night shots. We actually didn't go inside the Louvre at all and went to d'Orsay instead because we wanted something a bit more manageable. But since this was my first time in Paris, I still wanted to at least see the outside of the Louvre. We ended up taking stroll on our last night in the area and it was so beautiful. The buildings were all lit up and it was nice and quiet. There were some musicians playing classical music off to the side and just a few other people walking around. A perfect way to end the trip.

We spent out last three and a half days in France in Paris. I definitely wish we could've spend more time there so that I can take my time and really soak everything in and enjoy more of the non-touristy areas.

One thing I love about Paris is all the brasseries and cafes with outdoor seating. We found people sitting outside and enjoying a meal or a cup of coffee even when it was cold and rainy.

The buildings in Paris have such character, and I love the surprising jolts of color you find just walking around.

We spent the next couple of nights in St. Malo, Brittany - a beautiful, walled medieval town on the water, and then one night in a chateau in the Loire valley.

We got back from France about a week and a half ago, but it's taken me awhile to get back into the swing of things. As expected, France was fabulous! I took quite a few pictures, and have just begun sorting through them. We stayed in the quaint little town of Bayeux, Normandy the first night, then drove to the coast to see the D-day beaches and the American cemetery.

Hello friends! Sorry for the long absence. Work has been busier than usual, leaving me with little energy in the evenings for blogging or crafting. I hope it lets up soon so I'll be able to sew and put new things in the shop!

This past weekend I went to the Alameda Flea with my treasure-hunting buddy, Traci. I saw these old books and loved the beautiful patterns on the covers. I love the contrasting labels too - so perfect.

Oh, we're leaving this weekend for France! This will be my first time in Paris - I can't wait!

As promised, I've finally added some new items to the shop! These little fabric-covered wooden clips are the first non-paper items in my shop. Each set is unique, and there is definitely a bit more "handmade-ness" to it than my cards and notebooks. I really enjoyed making these, and had a lot of fun mixing and matching colors and patterns. Hope you guys like them too! Oh, and new jotter designs should be coming soon as well.

A reader recently shared with me an embroidery she had done of my twiggy design (the one used in my blog header), and then kindly offered to send it to me after I told her how much I liked it. Well, it arrived yesterday and I love it! Her work is beautiful - so clean and neat. I love that it's on a drawstring pouch which I'll be able to find many uses for. Isn't she sweet? I was working on new jotter designs and ended up taking a little detour to make these mini saddle-stitched workbooks for the shop. They come in 3 different designs in 2 colorways, and can be filled with either blank, lined, or gridded paper. I'm hoping to have new jotters (the little perfect-bound notebooks) ready to put into the shop sometime next week. Hope you guys like these ones!

I dutifully made the trek out to a couple of local Target stores this morning in hopes getting my hands on the new Orla Kiely line. It looked like much of the tableware had showed up on the shelves before today, as much of the items were picked through already. I still managed to nab a few goodies though.

I first discovered Orla when I was in Tokyo a couple of years ago. I happened to walk into an Orla Kiely store in a shopping center there and could not believe my eyes. Patterns that were simple and bold yet classy. Deliciously colorful but not in a way that was too loud or distracting. Everything was of course way out of my price range, but I was thrilled to be able to take a small souvenir with me: a catalog that is a piece of art in and of itself. I pulled it out the other day for some inspiration and thought I'd share some pages with you.

Ever since finding the globe at a garage sale, I've been on the lookout for more signs around the neighborhood on weekends. It's so much fun finding hidden gems for just a couple of bucks. Talk about guilt-free shopping! Below are my most recent finds - a genuine Italian leather vintage purse, a little coin purse, and an old Penguin book with an irresistible cover.

I've slowed down a bit since my flurry of crafting activity in December. January seems to be filled with resolutions and new things for many, but I'm having a slow start to the new year. Maybe because sometimes I just need a break from my natural need to always be productive. I think it's a good thing. I got to hang out with my cool design-y friend, Traci, on Saturday afternoon. She came with me to a fabric store nearby that was having a sale, and though the selection was just so-so, I found a few things that caught my eye.

We spotted a garage sale in my neighborhood on the way back and were super excited to find some great deals. The globe was just $5! I love it, and now it's sitting happily on top of my Ikea expedit shelf.

Oh and I picked up some metal trays at Staples this weekend as well (on the left in the picture above). They're perfect for keeping my fabrics organized and accessible.

Christmas is over but...

I've got another gift or two left to give.. (wrapped in a drawstring pouch I sewed, which I then stamped with a little tree I carved out of an eraser - forgot to take a picture of it until now!)

..and I got a bunch more gifts over the weekend when my brother and my new sister-in-law came back from their honeymoon in Asia. They brought me so many goodies from Hong Kong that I nearly fainted. Fabric, trim, and a stack of sewing books! One of them is in Japanese (shown in the first picture - I've seen and drooled over this one before in blog-land), and the rest is in Chinese, which is fabulous because I think I'll actually be able to read most of it. Apparently there is an entire district of Japanese-y things!

A time to sew

Happy new year everyone! It's hard to believe it's 2009 already. Time flies, especially when you're on vacation! I'm super bummed that my 2-week shutdown is coming to a close. It's been so nice to sleep in and take my time with everything. This is a bit late - but I wanted to share with you what Irving got me for Christmas - vintage pyrex! I guess I've been pining away at them enough that he knew exactly what would make me happy. I love them, and they'll be especially useful since I've been trying to phase out most of our plastic food containers.

While we were in Monterey on Christmas day, Irving actually spotted these pods on the ground and pointed them out to me because he knew I'd like them. I've never seen these before and love their simple shape.

I was hoping to start screenprinting this last week, but had an overwhelming desire to sew instead. So sew I did! This plastic bag dispenser was a quickie - just a tube that's open at the top (for stuffing in bags) and has an elastic opening at the bottom (for pulling out bags). It was nice to finally use some Amy Butler fabric I'd been hoarding for a couple of years!

About a year an a half ago my little mustard-colored wallet (which I bought in Japan and really liked) was stolen. Since then I've been using a plain old black leather one and have resisted buying a new one because I really wanted to make one. Recently I fell in love with these wallets and decided to use them as a model for mine. I used cruddy fabric to practice making a couple mock-ups since I knew it would take me a few tries before getting it right. I think the only difference is that I also made a pocket behind the coin compartment. The outside fabric is wool I cut out from an old men's blazer found at the local goodwill for $3. Even though it took me the better part of a day, I had so much fun making it.

Holiday crafting

This is the our first Christmas in the new house, and our first tree together. I haven't had a tree in awhile, so I only have an ornament here and there that friends have given me over the years. I decided I wanted to collect and make my ornaments slowly, so our tree is a bit sparse, but I love all the ornaments we have so far! Below are two I made recently. I love the little bird. It's from Joelle Hoverson's book, and I'm definitely going to be making more.

I also made a couple of soft tree ornaments as gifts for some co-workers. The pattern is from here. I'm pretty sure I'll be making more of these as ornaments and also just as trees to place around the house.

And okay, this has nothing to do with holiday crafting.. more like holiday buying.. for me. They opened a Daiso near us recently and I've been finding every excuse to go there. I found this cute wire basket which is now neatly enclosing the pile of mail and papers on my desk, as well as a little fabric container that can be hung. Both super useful. Oh, and I couldn't resist those fat little clothespins. I'm sure I'll think of something to do with them.

This has been a busy week with preparations for my brother's wedding this Friday and a bridal shower and bachelorette party on Saturday. It's also the last week of work before a company-wide 2-week shutdown, so work has been extra busy.. not to mention all the gifts for co-workers that need to be bought or made. It's going to be a fun weekend, but boy am I looking forward to 2 full weeks of not working!

First Saturday

This past Saturday I was invited to showcase/sell some of my goods at an open house event for a new residential development in downtown San Jose. Not too many people came by but I sold some things and had a good time. They had hot spiced wine there (which I've never had) and it was so good!

Also had a bit of time to make more burp cloths and also a bit of art for a baby shower gift. So many friends are having babies, I can hardly keep track! Gotta look for some more ideas for handmade gifts.

Pack o' pretty paper

There's something exciting about seeing a bunch of cute patterns next to each other. I think that's part of what makes quilting and patchwork so much fun. So I thought I'd put together a few of my patterns into little paper packs for the shop. People can use them for whatever they want - cards, gift tags, collages, scrapbooking, etc. Most of the patterns appear in my pocket jotters or planners, but there are a few that are new.

Now if only they would magically turn into fat quarters..

Moss and felt trees

I spent the entire day at home today (except for a quick trip to the post office) and loved it. I slept in, re-organized the studio and unpacked a couple more boxes. Charlie kept bugging me 'cause she wanted to go to the backyard, so I went out there with her and all she wanted was to sunbathe! I stayed out there with her and just sat in the sun for a bit too. It's been a bit drizzly lately and I noticed bits of green moss peeking out in between the patio slabs. Such a beautiful green.

I also tried out an idea I've had in my head for awhile: simple felt trees. I only made three, but I think it'd be fun to make a whole grove. They're inspired by these trees (which I still want to make one day) I found awhile back. I love the simplicity of it, but thought it would be neat to add some texture.

I sewed up little cones out of semi-circles and just stacked them on top of each other. I'll try and post some pictures of the process soon. Oh, and I just caught up on my blog-reading and saw this tutorial for similar trees made out of fabric. Really cute as well, be sure to check it out.

Busy busy

In the last couple of weeks the leaves have started falling like crazy around here. We have a big mulberry tree in our front yard and it's been dropping big, beautiful yellow and pale green leaves on our lawn.

This month has been busier than usual. It's been quite hectic for the shop, with a dooce mention leading to a surge in sales, and more things to make for Little Otsu. Some good college friends came to visit last weekend, so I took this past Monday off and we spent the afternoon in San Francisco. The highlight was having afternoon tea at Crown & Crumpet, which had a great selection of teas, delicious scones, and super cute decor. I'm not much of a pink person, but found the jolts of hot pink here and there fun and refreshing.

I haven't been taking pictures of Charlie with it getting dark so early. But I had a few spare minutes this morning and forced her to sit through a little photo shoot. She's 6 months now and getting bigger and more mischievous, shredding paper or napkins and basically treating whatever is within her reach as a toy.

I was tagged awhile ago by my friend Anita, and more recently by Laura. Here are 7 random facts about me:

1. I like to organize the dishes in the sink before I wash them.
2. In 5th grade, I starred in a musical called "The Most Amazing Snowman." I was the snowman.
3. I used to only wear colors like light gray, taupe, and light blue. And then after college I started liking red, then orange, then green, then yellow. Now I appreciate them all.
4. I prefer comfort food over fancy food. A good burrito will always win over sashimi.
5. I love the beach and the ocean, but can only swim the backstroke. I have issues with the whole breathing thing.
6. I can't stand the feeling of nail polish on my finger nails, but don't mind it on my toe nails.
7. I'm a night owl, but am constantly trying (unsuccessfully) to go to bed earlier.

fall in california

The pods on our wisteria tree has been popping now that fall is here. They snap fairly loudly when they pop, and on the ground you can find many open pods and seeds. I picked a few up the other day and was surprised at how hard and sturdy both the pods and seeds are. Charlie is teething and seems to enjoy gnawing on the pods.

The weather hasn't cooled down much during the day even though it's fall, so I let myself buy a couple of summery tops from Target recently. I like to layer anyway, so I figure even when it cools down a bit more, I can still wear them under cardigans, especially the vintage-y floral one.

I've been working on some new things, and hope to update the shop in the next couple of weeks or so. It's been taking a bit longer than I had expected (I forgot how long it takes me to finally be happy with a series of designs), but I'm excited. I'm getting a bit tired of looking at the old designs!

Spoonflower

My Spoonflower swatches came in the mail over the weekend!

I had read that their colors typically come out a bit less saturated, which definitely is the case, but it's fun nonetheless to see some of my designs on fabric. I might play around with the colors some more and give it another go before ordering actual yardage and possibly putting it into the shop. We'll see.

I'd really like to move towards textiles one day, but am uncertain about how or where to begin. Screenprinting designs myself would be so fun, but it seems very labor-intensive and also somewhat limiting (size of fabric, number of colors, etc). Yet professional digital textile printers (or textile screenprinters) would require me to order a lot of yardage before the price per yard is anywhere near reasonable. Starting with something simple that I screenprint myself makes the most sense right now. It'll take me time to gather everything I need and to get familiar with the process though. Must be patient!

Cubbyholes

It's hard for me to get work done when the space I'm in is messy and disorganized. My studio is in need of a lot of work, so I was happy to finally have the first major piece: the Ikea Expedit bookcase. I love shelves, cubbyholes, boxes, and basically anything that helps me organize and contain loose objects. I can't wait to finally be able to have a proper place for things in the studio. Here is Charlie, trying to take a nap and wishing I would quit pointing that camera at her already!

Alameda flea

I went to the Alameda flea this weekend and got an eyeful. The place is huuuuge, filled with all sorts of vintage goodness. We managed to walk through most of it - here are some things that caught my eye.

I ended up buying these vintage textiles, which the seller said she got from Germany. She had a lot of gorgeous prints to rummage through, all fairly large pieces. Many looked like they were drapery at one point. I absolutely love these two pieces, and am so excited for all the things I can possibly make with them!

Farmer's market and weekend crafting

I went to the farmer's market with my parents this Saturday since they now live just a couple minutes away. The weather was great and I came home with some nice organic produce that will last me half the week.

I also made some gifts for a baby shower: patchwork burp cloths and a whale softie. So many friends are having babies this fall, I'm already falling behind on gifts!
